Florent Mahoukou
| Biographie
Florent MAHOUKOU is a Franco-Congolese artist, dancer-performer, theater performer and choreographer. At the age of 12, he formed a street dance group in Brazzaville called “BANA 16ème”. His discovery of the Tambours de Brazza fueled his desire to dance. In 2000, he began his stage career, joining the Compagnie BINA-NGOUA/Serge Bissadissi in Pointe-Noire. In August 2002, he launched his choreographic career with his first piece, Corps en Trance. From 2003 to 2006, he taught traditional Congolese dance at the LycĂ©e Français in Pointe-Noire.
He has taken part in numerous workshops with, among others, Cie Paco DĂ©cina, Carolyn Carlson and Sara Orselie, Salia Sanou and Seydou Boro, Amadou Bouro, Kettly Noel, Eric Lamoureux, Jean-Pierre Amiel… He has never ceased to deepen his bodywork and diversify his experiences.
Since 2007, Florent MAHOUKOU has been initiator and artistic director of the RUE DANCE event, choreographic strolls in the streets of Congo, Niger, Gabon…
He collaborated on Ndjila na Ndjila with Compagnie BANINGA, winner of Danse l’Afrique Danse 2008, and also performed Le Sacre du printemps with Compagnie Heddy MAALEM and Nos enfants nous font peur… with Groupe RICTUS/David BOBEE.
The choreographer continues to assert his artistic personality with his piece On The Steps… winner of the first prize at the Rencontres ChorĂ©graphiques d’Afrique et de l’OcĂ©an Indien and the Puma CrĂ©ative prize in Bamako.
Enriched by the encounters and experiences that have nurtured his career as a performer both in Congo and abroad, he has developed a choreographic style all his own. He continues to confront his choreographic work by collaborating with other choreographers such as: dance teacher Laurent Longa Fo, choreographer Andreya Ouamba, choreographer Gregory Maqoma, director David BobĂ©e, author-writer Ronan ChĂ©neau, author-playwright DieudonnĂ© Niangouna, playwright and director Hedi Clermont De Tonnerre… He is also initiated into the Hip Hop dynamic, drawing inspiration from urban territory. His intimate choreographic universe revolves around suspension and the joy of movement. Clearly contemporary, he reflects the times, sometimes bordering on the avant-garde…
